Wiring does not last forever. Insulation hardens, connections loosen and circuits that were designed for a few lamps and a radio now run kettles, laptops and induction hobs. A rewire replaces the fixed cabling, accessories and consumer unit so the installation meets today's safety standards. PowerArc plans each rewire around how you live, tells you honestly what needs replacing, and gives you a fixed quote before any floorboards come up.
Signs Your House May Need Rewiring
Look for rubber-insulated or lead-sheathed cable, fabric-covered flex, round-pin sockets, a fuse box with rewirable fuse wire, and no RCD protection anywhere in the property. Scorch marks around sockets, a fishy or burning smell, sockets that buzz or feel warm, and lights that flicker or dim when appliances start are further warnings. Many houses in Hornchurch, Romford and Ilford built before the 1960s still contain some original wiring, though a careful inspection is the only reliable way to know what condition it is in.
Full Rewire or Partial Rewire?
A full rewire replaces every circuit in the property and is usually right when the cabling is obsolete throughout. A partial rewire tackles specific parts, such as a kitchen, an extension, the upstairs lighting or the sockets on one floor, and leaves sound circuits in place. We base the recommendation on test results rather than age alone, so you are not paying to replace cable that is still serviceable. If we advise a partial approach, we will say clearly what remains and what its limitations are.

Starting Point: Inspection and Quote
Every rewire begins with a survey. We inspect the existing installation, look at the loft, floor voids and the meter position, and discuss how you want the finished house to work. That conversation covers socket and lighting positions, data and TV points, outside lighting and any future plans such as an EV charger or a loft conversion. Afterwards you receive a written, fixed quote that sets out what is included, so you can compare it with confidence.
First Fix
First fix is the rough work. We lift floorboards, chase walls where needed, drill through joists and run new cable to every point, fitting back boxes and cable routes for sockets, switches and lights. The old wiring is disconnected and removed as the new runs go in. This stage is the messiest, and is where dust and noise are at their peak, so we protect floors and contents and keep the working area as tidy as the job allows.
Second Fix
Once any plastering and decorating that needs doing around the new cable runs has been completed, we return for second fix. We fit the sockets, switches and light fittings, install the new consumer unit with RCD or RCBO protection, and connect everything. Every circuit is then tested, labelled and energised. This is the stage when the property starts to feel like a home again, and it normally takes a fraction of the time that first fix does.
How Long Does a Rewire Take?
For a typical three-bedroom house, expect roughly five to ten working days, depending on the size of the property, how much access we have and whether you are living there throughout. An empty house is quicker because we can lift floors and work in several rooms at once. If you stay in, we plan the order so you keep a working kitchen and somewhere to sleep, and we will agree the sequence with you in advance.
Making Good and Redecoration
Rewiring inevitably disturbs plaster and floors. We fill and repair chased channels and put floorboards back, but we do not plaster or redecorate unless that has been agreed and included in your quote. Many customers time a rewire to coincide with a renovation so that a plasterer and decorator can follow straight after. If you would like us to coordinate trades, tell us at the survey stage and we will build it into the plan.
Certification and Building Regulations
A rewire is notifiable work in England. PowerArc is registered with a competent person scheme for Part P notification, so we handle the notification and you receive a building regulations compliance certificate. You also receive an Electrical Installation Certificate recording the design, inspection and test results for the installation, certified to BS 7671. These documents matter when you sell, remortgage or insure the property, so we make sure they are complete and handed over before we leave. We work across Havering, Redbridge, Newham, Waltham Forest and Essex.

Questions
House rewiring FAQs
How do I know if my house needs rewiring?
Warning signs include rubber or lead-sheathed cable, round-pin sockets, a rewirable fuse box, no RCD protection and scorch marks. Only a proper inspection and test can confirm the condition, so we recommend a survey before deciding.
How long does it take to rewire a 3-bed house?
Typically five to ten working days, depending on size, access and whether you are living in the property. We will agree a programme with you at the survey stage so you know what to expect each day.
How much does a rewire cost?
It depends on the size of the property, the number of points and the access we have. We give a fixed quote after a survey, and it states clearly what is and is not included.
Can I stay in the house while it is rewired?
Often yes, though it is more disruptive and can take a little longer. We plan the work room by room so you keep essentials such as a kitchen supply and a bedroom, and we will discuss this with you before starting.
Do you do the plastering and decorating afterwards?
We fill and make good the channels we cut, but we do not plaster or decorate unless that has been agreed in your quote. Many customers book a plasterer and decorator to follow us.
Will I get a certificate and does the work need approval?
Yes. A rewire is notifiable under the Building Regulations, and we notify it through our competent person scheme. You receive a compliance certificate and an Electrical Installation Certificate once everything is tested.
