Your consumer unit, often still called a fuse board, is the control point for every circuit in the property. Older boards with rewirable fuses, or early plastic units with no RCD cover, fall short of what current safety standards expect. PowerArc replaces them with modern metal-clad units, tests every circuit as we go, and issues the certification you need for insurers, buyers and landlords. You get a fixed quote before work starts.

Signs You Need a New Consumer Unit

Typical warning signs include a brown or cream box with rewirable fuse wire, ceramic fuse carriers, no RCD protection at all, a plastic enclosure that is cracked, discoloured or warm, or breakers that trip for no obvious reason. An electrician may also recommend replacement after an inspection report lists the board as unsatisfactory. Adding an EV charger, a new kitchen or a larger shower often shows that the old board has no spare ways. Many homes around Romford and Ilford still have 1970s and 1980s boards that are ready to be retired.

RCD and RCBO Protection Explained

An RCD detects electricity leaking to earth, for example through a person, and cuts the supply in a fraction of a second. Older split-load boards put several circuits behind one RCD, so a single fault can knock out half the house. We usually recommend RCBOs, which combine overcurrent and RCD protection on each circuit individually. A fault on the cooker circuit then trips only the cooker, and the lights stay on. Individual protection also makes fault finding quicker, because you can see straight away which circuit is involved.

Metal-Clad Units and Current Standards

BS 7671, the wiring regulations, now expects consumer units in homes to be made from non-combustible material, which in practice means a metal enclosure rather than the plastic boxes used for decades. If a fault caused a connection to overheat, a metal case helps contain it. We fit units from established manufacturers, label every circuit clearly and leave the cover in a tidy, finished condition. Because the regulations are updated periodically, we design each installation to the version in force on the day of the work.

AFDDs and Surge Protection

Two further devices are worth discussing. Arc fault detection devices, or AFDDs, monitor a circuit for the electrical arcing that can start fires from damaged cable or loose connections, and are sometimes recommended for higher-risk circuits or sleeping accommodation. Surge protective devices guard sensitive electronics against voltage spikes and are commonly included with a new board unless an assessment shows they are not needed. We explain what is appropriate for your property and what each option adds before you commit.

How the Day Runs

A typical swap takes most of a working day. We confirm the circuits and the earthing and bonding arrangements, then agree an outage window with you. The supply is isolated, the old board removed and the new one mounted and wired, before every circuit is tested and the power restored. Expect the electricity to be off for several hours, so plan around fridges, internet and any medical equipment. We tell you in advance if the job might run longer, for example where the existing tails or bonding need upgrading.

Part P, Certification and Paperwork

In England, replacing a consumer unit is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations. PowerArc is registered with a competent person scheme, so we can notify the work ourselves rather than asking you to involve building control. On completion you receive an Electrical Installation Certificate recording the tests we carried out, plus a building regulations compliance certificate in due course. Keep both safely, because solicitors, insurers, mortgage lenders and letting agents commonly ask to see them.

What Else We Check While We Are There

A new board can only be as safe as the wiring connected to it. During the changeover we test every circuit, and if we find defective cable, missing earthing or overloaded sockets, we report it in plain language rather than quietly connecting it to a new unit. Where the problem is minor, we can quote the fix on the spot. If it is serious, we explain the options, which might include rewiring part of the property, so you can decide without pressure.

Homes, Landlords and Small Businesses

We replace consumer units in houses and flats from Hornchurch, Upminster and Dagenham through Wanstead, Woodford and Chigwell to Loughton and Brentwood. Landlords often combine a new board with the periodic inspection they need to stay compliant, and we can coordinate both visits. Small shops and offices are handled outside trading hours where possible, so the business is not left without power during working time. Every job begins with a survey and a fixed quote.

Questions

Consumer unit replacement FAQs

How long does it take to replace a consumer unit?

Most domestic replacements are completed in a single day, with the power off for several hours while the old board is removed and the new one wired and tested. Larger properties or those needing extra remedial work can take longer, and we will tell you beforehand.

Do I need a new consumer unit?

You probably do if you have rewirable fuses, no RCD protection, a cracked or damaged plastic board, or no spare ways for new circuits. An inspection of your installation will confirm whether replacement is needed or advisable.

How much does a new fuse board cost?

The cost depends on the number of circuits, the type of protection you choose and any remedial work required. We give a fixed quote before work starts, after a survey of your existing board and wiring.

Is a new consumer unit notifiable under Part P?

Yes, in England it is notifiable. PowerArc is registered with a competent person scheme, so we notify the work for you and you receive the compliance paperwork alongside your Electrical Installation Certificate.

What is the difference between an RCD and an RCBO?

An RCD protects a group of circuits from earth leakage, so one fault can cut several of them. An RCBO protects each circuit individually against both earth leakage and overload, which limits the disruption and makes faults easier to trace.

Will I get a certificate after the work?

Yes. You receive an Electrical Installation Certificate confirming the work complies with BS 7671, together with the test results. Keep it for your insurer, any future sale and your letting agent if you rent the property out.
