Electrical emergencies rarely pick a convenient moment. A dead consumer unit at midnight, a socket that crackles when you plug in a kettle, or a ceiling light fitting dripping after a leak upstairs all need prompt attention from a qualified electrician. PowerArc runs a 24/7 emergency line covering Havering, Redbridge, Barking and Dagenham, Newham, Waltham Forest, Epping Forest and Brentwood. Our priority is simple: make your property safe first, then agree the proper repair.
When to Call an Emergency Electrician
Call straight away if you have a burning or fishy smell near a socket, switch or consumer unit, visible sparking or scorch marks, hot or discoloured faceplates, a buzzing or crackling sound from wiring, or an electric shock from an appliance or fitting. Also call if the power has failed in your home while neighbours still have theirs, or if an RCD will not reset. These signs point to a fault that can escalate into a fire or a shock risk, so they are not worth waiting out until morning.
What to Do While You Wait for Us
If it is safe to do so, switch off the affected circuit or the main switch at your consumer unit. Do not touch anything that is wet, scorched or sparking, and keep children and pets well away. Unplug appliances only if the socket looks undamaged and you can reach it dry-handed. Do not keep resetting a breaker that trips straight back, because it is telling you there is a live fault. If you see flames or smoke, leave the building and call 999 before you call us.

Is It Your Property or the Whole Street?
Look outside first. If neighbouring houses are dark, or streetlights are out, the problem is probably with the local network rather than your wiring, and an electrician cannot fix it. In that case call 105, the free UK power-cut number, which connects you to your local network operator and works from any phone. If your lights are on elsewhere but one room or one floor is dead, or only your property has lost supply, that points to a fault inside the installation and we can help.
Making Safe and Restoring Power
On arrival our electrician will isolate the dangerous section, test the circuits around it and find out what has failed. Often that means removing a scorched accessory, isolating a damaged cable run or replacing a failed protective device so the rest of the property can be re-energised safely. Where a full repair cannot be completed on the night, we make the area safe and leave the remaining circuits working, then explain plainly what is outstanding. You will have a fixed quote before any permanent work starts.
Temporary Supplies When Permanent Repair Has to Wait
Some repairs need materials, access or a network visit that cannot happen at 2 am. Where it can be done safely, we can rearrange circuits or run a temporary supply so that essentials such as the fridge, freezer, lighting and a few sockets keep working until the permanent fix. For businesses, that might mean keeping tills, alarms or security lighting live overnight. We will always tell you what is and is not on, and which areas must stay switched off.
Storm, Flood and Water Damage
Water and electricity are a dangerous mix. After a burst pipe upstairs, a roof leak or flooding in Ilford, Barking or Dagenham, do not use the affected circuits and keep clear of damp sockets, light fittings and the consumer unit. We dry-test the installation, isolate wet sections and check insulation before anything is switched back on. Storms can also bring down outdoor lighting, damage garage and shed supplies or trip the whole property, and these are common reasons for out-of-hours calls.
Tripping RCDs and Repeated Power Loss
An RCD that trips once during a thunderstorm may be a nuisance. One that trips repeatedly, or will not reset at all, is protecting you from a genuine fault such as damaged cable insulation, moisture ingress or a failing appliance. Our electricians work through the circuits one at a time, using insulation resistance testing to track down the cause rather than guessing. If the fault is deep inside the installation, we make safe for the night and book the thorough investigation for the next available slot.

Questions
Emergency electrician FAQs
What should I do if I have a power cut at home?
First check whether your neighbours also have no power. If the whole street is out, call 105, the free UK power-cut number. If only your property is affected, switch off at the consumer unit if it is safe to do so and call PowerArc on 07775 512758.
How quickly can an emergency electrician get to me?
Arrival time depends on where our team is and the time of day, so we do not promise a fixed figure. We aim to reach most of East London and Essex quickly, and we will give you an honest estimate as soon as you call.
Do you really cover nights, weekends and bank holidays?
Yes. Our emergency line is staffed 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Out-of-hours work is quoted at a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises when the job is finished.
What if I can smell burning from a socket or consumer unit?
Switch off the circuit or main switch if you can do so safely, keep clear and call us at once. If you can see flames or smoke, leave the property and call 999 first. Do not use the socket again until it has been inspected.
Why does my RCD keep tripping and will not reset?
It is usually reacting to a real fault, such as damp, a damaged cable or a failing appliance. Unplug everything on the circuit and try once, but if it trips again do not keep forcing it. Call us and we will trace the cause.
Can you fix the problem on the same visit?
Often yes, particularly for failed accessories, protective devices and simple faults. If a permanent repair needs parts or a longer job, we make the property safe, restore what we can and agree a fixed quote for the rest.
